About This Item

New York, NY Pocket Books: Cardinal, 1965. Mass Market Paperback First Edition Thus (1965), so stated. The hardcover edition was published by Doubleday in 1955. First Edition Thus (1965), so stated. Very Good+ in Wraps: shows just a touch of wear to the extremities with some scuffing to the heel of the backstrip; mild rubbing to the white background field of the rear panel and some consequent soiling to same; a tiny tear at the outside edge of one of the text pagds; a very faint crease to the upper corner of the front panel; the expected light tanning to the text pages due to aging; the binding is square, if ever so slightly concave; and secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the backstrip. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing minor, unobtrusive cosmetic imperfections. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. (6.95 x 4.2 x 1.35 inches). 920 pages. Language: English. Weight: 15 ounces. All edges tinted red. Pocket 95010. First published in hardcover by Doubleday in 1955. Mass Market Paperback. Thomas Bertram Costain (1885 – 1965) was a Canadian-American journalist who became a best-selling author of historical novels at the age of 57. In 1920 he became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He worked for Doubleday Books as an editor 1939-1946. In 1942, he realized his longtime dream when this first novel For My Great Folly was published, and it became a bestseller. His most popular novel was The Black Rose (1945), centred in the time and actions of Bayan of the Baarin also known as Bayan of the Hundred Eyes. Another popular title was The Silver Chalice (1952). It is the fictional story of the making of a silver chalice to hold the Holy Grail (itself here conflated with the Holy Chalice) and includes 1st century biblical and historical figures: Luke, Joseph of Arimathea, Simon Magus and his companion Helena, and the apostle Peter. He received a Doctor of Letters (D. Litt) degree from the University of Western Ontario in May 1952 and he received a gold medallion from the Canadian Club of New York in June 1965.
