Black-and-white photographic frontispiece  of Robert Oppenheimer. Between pages 128 and 129 there are 12 pages of black-and-white photographs. 1/4 pale yellow back strip with 3/4 darker yellow coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with light and dark blue colour titles to the front panel and back strip. "In this book I have chronicled the development of a number of scientific discoveries and inventions of the past hundred years which have been designed to take human life in war and which have influenced history, and I have tried to describe some of the attitudes and illuminate some of the motives of the men who scientific abilities have so powerfully contributed to this influence."  from the forward page 15. Softening of the back strip edges with rubbing of the book corners and lower book edges. The book panels show marks and stains with age toning of the text block edges and pages; and scattered foxing is present to the text block edges. Remains of the sticker can be seen to the top edge of the three front end page. Shipping of the dustwrapper corners and back strip edges. Heavy rubbing along all creases of the dustwrapper, particularly the back strip, which also shows the results of insect activities.
