About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1950. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good Plus/Very Good. Hoffman. Tan patterned paper over boards, title printed in red onto upper board and spine, 8vo (8 inches tall), pp. viii, 215, publisher's seal and "A" printed on copyright page. Volume with bump to top corner of upper board and bookseller's rubberstamp to rear pastedown. Price-clipped DJ with light edge wear and soil to bottom panel, toning to top edge and two small chips to head of spine panel. Adapted and filmed in French as Terrain Vague in 1960, the film presented a look at juvenile delinquency in Paris and was based on Tomboy, the second of Ellson's fifteen JD novels. Tomboy followed his first novel Duke, and tells the story of a young Manhattan gal who ' ... could whip half the boys in the gang, and she was leader of the "debs" '. Tomboy was followed by The Golden Spike (released as Reefer Boy in UK) by Ellson in 1952. JD artwork on the front panel by "Hoffman", text includes an introduction by Dr. Frederic Wertham.
