Sledge of Atlanta responding to her comments about a piece he did on his Emmy Award-winning NBC program The Huntley-Brinkley Show on African American voting patterns in the 1964 presidential election, which saw Lyndon Johnson handily defeat Barry Goldwater. Brinkley writes in part, I regret that brief story I reported Wednesday night has been widely misunderstood, perhaps because I did not explain it thoroughly enough. . . Of course it is true that Negroes are voting in increasing numbers in many places in the South, as we all know. He goes on to say, I did not say all the Negroes were denied the right to vote. Perhaps in many of these counties they could have registered but just did not bother. . . It was simply a statement of mathematical facts, not opinion or bias, and its only purpose was to illustrate the voting patterns of the American people.
