About This Item

7.25 x 10.25 National Broadcasting Company stationery, folded in thirds for mailing. Foxing to upper half. A typed letter, dated November 20, 1964, to Mrs. E.D. Sledge of Atlanta responding to her comments about a piece he did on his Emmy Award-winning NBC program The Huntley-Brinkley Show on African American voting patterns in the 1964 presidential election, which saw Lyndon Johnson handily defeat Barry Goldwater. Brinkley writes in part, I regret that brief story I reported Wednesday night has been widely misunderstood, perhaps because I did not explain it thoroughly enough. . . Of course it is true that Negroes are voting in increasing numbers in many places in the South, as we all know. He goes on to say, I did not say all the Negroes were denied the right to vote. Perhaps in many of these counties they could have registered but just did not bother. . . It was simply a statement of mathematical facts, not opinion or bias, and its only purpose was to illustrate the voting patterns of the American people. And it seems to me that anyone, whatever his political views or other views, would like to know the facts. Intriguing content, SIGNED by Brinkley in blue ink.
