First edition/First impression. Size is octavo (8vo), 8.375"/21.5cm h. Quarterbound in publisher's dark blue cloth boards, gray cloth spine, dark blue lettering and ornamentation to spine and portion of gray cloth extending to board. Glossy color pictorial dj. Endpapers identical - b&w period plan and profile of the USS Monitor. Xiv pp prelim material, 176 numbered pp, plus two blank; 8 pp glossy b&w illus. Intro (by Henry Steele Commager), list of illus, 20 chaps. Acknowl, bibliography, index. Condition notes: quite a nice first edition/first printing w the following features/flaws: bookstore tag tail blank p facing title page, .5" h x .75" l, from "Herr's Book Store, Lancaster, PA". Dj is unclipped and retains excellent color but has numerous small chips and tears esp to folds; excellent color retention to boards, binding just off square, tanning to edges. Ffep is marred by an ownership sticker which has itself been covered in blank white stickers. Else interior is unmarked and clean w typical tanning. We personally inspect every book we offer.
