About This Item
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1957. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. Publisher's mid-blue boards with gilt spine lettering. SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE MONTH OF PUBLICATION (AUGUST 1957). A couple of small rectangular strips of tape residue to both the front and rear end-papers (likely caused by an old dustwrapper protector) otherwise a near fine copy with bright and clean boards in a VG+ D/W (priced 12s 6d net to the inside flap as called for). The D/W has a couple of small areas of discolouration to the front flap (likely caused by an old dustwrapper protector) but is otherwise a very nearly fine copy. Inscribed by the Author to the front free end-paper: To/ Auntie Edith & Uncle George/ with love from the/ author/ August 22nd 1957". A strange, tense and fast-moving novel set in the Pyrenees. From Contemporary Authors, Vol. 1, 1967: Mary. Stewart once claimed Thunder on the Right as her least favourite novel. "I detest that book. I'm ashamed of it, and I'd like to see it drowned beyond recovery. It's overwritten. It was actually the second book I wrote, and for some strange reason I went overboard, splurged with adjectives, all coloured purple." Notwithstanding the Author's negativity towards this title, the first edition is genuinely uncommon and this is a nice copy and extremely uncommon with these attributes. Photographs/scans available upon request.
