Clark, New South (t.p. illustrated) II:6 - "[Archer] seemed unable to divest himself of certain English attitudes. His position on race is indicated by his proposal for the creation of a separate state for the negro population... [the book] presents a moderate English point of view and represents travel journalism at its best." Archer dedicates his book to H.G. Wells.
