About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. If you haven't read P. G. Wodehouse before, this might not be the best book to start with, if you want to get thoroughly acquainted with the writing style and narrative approach of this master of comedy. But once you've opened and started reading, you probably won't be able to stop! A droll, unique and overall incredibly enjoyable story, Three Men and a Maid will amuse, delight and shock you all at once, and you won't even feel like it was written too long ago.

In all actuality, however, most of Wodehouse's novels, including this one, were written around the start of the 20th century, in a time when social mores and class separation still had an impact on the lives of most people living in Britain and America. Unlike most authors, however, Wodehouse uses the social barriers, challenges and awkward spots generated by unusual situations to create the most outstanding romantic comedies.

Three Men and a Maid is unique in that virtually none of the characters can be considered likeable. From the main character, who isn't very bright or articulate, to the demanding, high-maintenance female protagonist, there is definitely much to look forward to in terms of less than noble character traits. Nevertheless, in a manner characteristic of Wodehouse's previous novels, you will soon find that everyone ends up getting along in the end, and you may even be witness to a few surprising twists that add to the enjoyment even more.

For fans of Jeeves, Wooster and Blandings Castle, disappointment will definitely not be in the cards. This story is just as exciting, delightful and hilarious as Wodehouse's most famous series of novels, and the style, descriptions and well-placed narrative elements will undoubtedly remind you of some of them. What's best of all: you'll find Wodehouse can still stay true to his distinctive and familiar style, while introducing original elements every step of the way.

Synopsis

Through the curtained windows of the furnished apartment which Mrs. Horace Hignett had rented for her stay in New York rays of golden sunlight peeped in like the foremost spies of some advancing army. It was a fine summer morning. The hands of the Dutch clock in the hall pointed to thirteen minutes past nine; those of the ormolu clock in the sitting-room to eleven minutes past ten; those of the carriage clock on the bookshelf to fourteen minutes to six.
