About This Item

London: Arrowsmith, 1889. A first edition, first printing published by Arrowsmith 1889. Three Men in a Boat - the true first issue with 'Quay Street' to the title page. A very good copy with one small name to the head of the title page. Recently rebound in full red leather with four raised bands and gilt titling. Marbled endpapers. "Three Men in a Boat" is known for its witty and often self-deprecating humour. It satirises the conventions of Victorian travel writing while also offering a light-hearted commentary on the everyday challenges of life. The novel has remained popular as a beloved classic of British humour literature.

Synopsis

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel.

Reviews

On Sep 4 2019, a reader said:
Laugh out loud hysterical! Every other line is hilarious! I made the mistake of reading this in public not realizing how funny it is! My advice is not to do that! You will not be able to stop the guffaws, snickers, chuckles from bursting forth. Mr. Jerome certainly knew how to write a witty and fantastic story. I'm happy that I found this masterpiece.
