About This Item

London: J. W. Arrowsmith, 1889 . First edition. Cloth. Good. 8" by 6". Not Stated. The first edition, first state, of Jerome K. Jerome's much loved comic novel. The first edition, first issue, with 'Quay Street' and no street number on the title page and the thirty-seven item 'Bristol Library' catalogue on verso of final text leaf. With vignette illustrations throughout from Arthur Frederics.A comic novel detailing a two-week boating holiday along the Thames, this beloved work was intended to be a travel guide, but the comedic style and lengthy sentimental passages undermined this. With the comedic elements praised as still relevant in the modern day, the work has been adapted numerous times. With three pages of advertisements to the rear, and to the rear pastedown. With the inscription of Galfrid Leslie Melville and Victor Leslie Melville, dated 1911, to the half title. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with a touch of fading to rear pastedown. Light damp staining to rear board. Front hinge significantly strained, and weakly held by one cord only. Lacking front free endpaper. Inscription to half title. Internally, binding lightly strained, with one gathering working loose. Pages generally clean and bright. Good

Synopsis

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog), published in 1889, is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel.

Reviews

On Sep 4 2019, a reader said:
Laugh out loud hysterical! Every other line is hilarious! I made the mistake of reading this in public not realizing how funny it is! My advice is not to do that! You will not be able to stop the guffaws, snickers, chuckles from bursting forth. Mr. Jerome certainly knew how to write a witty and fantastic story. I'm happy that I found this masterpiece.
