About This Item

New York, NY: Penguin Books, 2007. First Edition. 23rd Printing . Soft cover. Near Fine/None as Issued. Archival Photographs. Text/NEW & Bright. Illustrated softcover/VG; strong w/light soiling to front surface. NY Times' Bestseller, winner of the 2007 Kiriyama Prize, and, on the basis of which co-author Greg Mortenson received numerous college honorary awards. A humanly fauled autobiography. Fascinating & moving "reputed documentary" since proven to be "semi-fictional". In still traditional Pakistan rural regions, strongholds of Taliban & fundamental Islamists, one served a cup of tea to new acquaintances, two to friends, & three to favored initimates. Co-author Greg Mortenson sipped many a 3rd cup from poor villagers who nursed him to health after his 1993 failed attemtp to scale K2 --- hence the title. Mortenson elected to show his gratitude by building rural schools (some never built as claimed, others abandoned & used otherwise, and far less than the 50 claimed in the volume), albeit from stones, especially to promote girls' education. Co-founder & director of the non-profit Central Asia Institute (CAI), he founded of Pennies for Peace for books for Afghanistan & Pakistan. Alas, this chronicle, and Mortenson's following writings & claims are beset w/falsehoods & financial abuses confirmed by Montana's Attorney General, 2011 CBS 60 Minutes, & Jon Krakauer. Read as a moving contempory narrative, semi documentary & semi-fictional, rich w/impatient dreams to make the tomorrows better without repect for long held traditional religious & social devotions.
