In this new study, Professor Burnett has re-examined the work of three of the most important of the early Greek poets, translating all of the extended fragments. Instead of treating Sappho's songs as confessions of present anguish, Alcaeus' lyrics as outbursts of political fervour, and Archilochus' scurrilous verses as spontaneous explosions or rage, she looks for the traditional elements in the work of each of these poets. She emphasizes the importance of the small sympotic audience, the influence of folk modes and cult experiences, and also the conscious, innovating professionalism of the three great archaic singers."
