John Murray. 1859. Three volume set in quarter-bound vellucent-like binding over green boards with gilt inlay on boards and spine by Cedric Chivers (Gay St Bath). Paper is age-toned with mild degree of foxing with all pages tight in hinge(s). Volume 1 has a mark on the front board (see photo), else normal shelf wear to all volumes. Volumes are all from the personal library of Josiah C. Wedgwood; each volume has the personal bookplate showing the coat-of-arms of Josiah C. Wedgwood on the front pastedown. Each volume contains an inscription of ownership by Josiah C. Wedgwood dated 1901. Small sticker shows books were purchased in the same town as Josiah lived (Newcastle-on-Tyne). Josiah C. Wedgood the 4th (1872-1943) was a British Liberal and Labour politician who served in the government under the Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. A prominent single-tax activist, he was the great-grandson of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood. The first edition was published as a monthly series from 1838-1840 and in book form in 1840 by Edward William Lane (1801-1876).The 3 volume edition is the revised edition or "New Edition" edited by his nephew Edward Stanley Poole. Keeping it in the family the first edition was updated with annotations by his great-nephew (Stanley-Lane Poole) and published posthumously in 1883. Each volume 6x9in. Each volume illustrated by many hundred engravings on wood.
