About This Item

12mo, pp. [iv], 216; [iv], 215; contemporary red half roan, spins lettered in gilt.

^gThinks I to Myselly^g success was due to its opportune appearance, though one can hardly say it is great literature or even has much of a plot.

Still, it was simple story dealing with the inconstancies of the social life of the time told in a sarcastic and humorous style. It took the reading public by storm and became a publishing sensation, and was to go through nine editions by the middle of 1812 and continued its success by being published until as late as 1835. Another novel, on a similar theme, was something of a flop in comparison, Jane Austen's first published novel ^gSense and Sensibility^g, had only a moderate success with a second edition appearing in 1813.

Such then are the vicissitudes of taste and fashion, and who knows, maybe a future generations will discover that Nares was, after all, the better book of 1811!
