About This Item
London: Anthroposophic Publishing Company, 1954. Stated at copyright: "Revised Edition 1954." Translation revised by M. Cotterell and published by permission of Rudolf Steiner Nachlasverwaltang in agreement with Rudolf Steiner Publishing. The preface to revised edition by Rudolf Steiner is dated 1922. This would likely be referring to the revised edition in German and not this edition with translation by M. Cotterell. White full cloth boards, gilt impressed cover and spine titles, moderate shelf wear, rub. Spine titles reversed in direction as is somewhat common with books from Europe. Pages very good with tanning at endpapers; no writing in text body. Stylish antiquarian signature pencilled at front endpaper. Bind fine, some cant; hinges intact. Compact 5 1/2" x 7 5/8" design. Originally translated from the third German edition in 1910 by E. D. S. who is likely Édouard Schuré, a close friend of Rudolf Steiner and a very important French philosopher and man of mystery in his own right who wrote several volumes of note. This edition with revised translation for clarity by M. Cotterell. Rare near very good first edition thus of this pivotal work. Steiner was a well known philosopher and a leader of theosophical movement in his younger years before he developed his own spiritual methods in anthroposophy. He tirelessly sought a provable link between spirituality and the scientific method. He was also a playwright, artist, educational philosopher, reformer, and the founder of Waldorf schools. This book reveals the author's engagement with the world of theosophy which profoundly impacted the development of alternative spirituality in the early twentieth century. Contents: "Prefaces to the First, Second, and Third English Editions; Preface to the Revised Edition; Introduction; Chapter I. - The Nature of Man: 1. The Corporeal Being of Man; 2. The Soul Being of Man; 3. The Spiritual Being of Man; 4. Body, Soul, and Spirit; Chapter II. - Re-Embodiment of the Spirit and Destiny: (Reincarnation and Karma); Chapter III. - The Three Worlds: 1.
