About This Item

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. New Haven, Yale University Press, 1926. Octavo, xvi, 343 pages with 155 illustrations. Cloth a little sunned, marked and scuffed, with slight wear to the extremities; edges lightly marked; a very good copy. With the contemporary ownership details of 'I.F. Phipps, Cornell University ... April 1926', and the later name-stamp of G.M.E. Mayo, University of Adelaide. While still a student at the University of Adelaide, Phipps had been appointed to head the plant breeding section at the Waite Institute; he was 'sent to the US to train under Cornell geneticists R.A. Emerson, Barbara McClintock, and George Beadle from 1925 to 1928' (David Steffes: 'The "Eco-Worldview" of Charles Birch', 2008). Some lightly pencilled marginal notes (confined mainly to the 'General Conclusions' chapter) appear to be by Phipps. The author, famous for his experimental research with the fruit fly and establishment of the chromosome theory of heredity, won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1933.
