About This Item
First and only edition of one of the chief theoretical works on Constructivism, this book is a collection of writings by the Art-Industrial Council of the People's Commisariat's Visual Arts Division, which was involved in integrating art with industrial culture, including essays by Osip Brik, Sergei Filipov, Vasilii Voronov, A. Toporkov, V. Arkin, with lithograph wrappers by David Shterenberg. Avant-garde artist and founder of the famous INKhUK (Institute of Artistic Culture), Shterenberg (1981-1948) studied in Paris in 1906-1912. Throughout the 1920s, he also taught at VKhUTEMAS, a site of great artistic experimentation at the time. The publication includes articles on rationalism in art and the false division between fine and applied arts. Published during the still raging Russian Civil War, in conditions of wartime scarcity, the paper quality of the publication is low and the print shop credited on the publication is that of the Moscow Taganka prison (Tipografiia Moskovskoi Taganskoi Tiur'my). A wrapper variant in yellow or orange is also known, as is a variant cover design printed on beige stock.
As of December 2023, KVK, OCLC show copies at eight libraries worldwide.
