About This Item
London: J. Dodsley, 1781 . Leather. Very Good. 9" by 6". None. The second volume of the second edition of this English clergyman's controversial support of the social benefits of polygamy. The second volume only of the three volume second edition of this work from English barrister, clergyman and writer Martin Madan. In 1780, Madan raised a storm of opposition by the publication of his 'Thelyphthora', in which he advocated polygamy as the remedy for the evils of society. Arising from his acquaintance with the plight of the unfortunate inmates of the Lock Hospital, and with his arguments based mainly on scriptural authority, the crux of his case was expressed in a single sentence: 'Every man who has seduced a woman, whether with or without a promise of marriage, should be obliged to wed her publicly'.His book caused many angry replies. Amongst them was 'Anti-Thelyphthora' by his first cousin, the poet William Cowper, which was published anonymously. Endpapers renewed. In a half calf binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to joints and back strip head and tail. Endpapers renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with light spotting to perimeters. Very Good
