An Ukrainian born as Jacob Ovcharov in Voroshilovka village, Podolie Governorate, near Vinnytsia, Russian Empire. He moved, with his parents and younger brother, to the United States in 1923. As a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, which was part of the US Department of Agriculture, he traveled to Puerto Rico in 1941. This trip had such a profound influence on him that he settled there permanently in 1946 until his death in 1997. The collection in this book, published for the first time in 1996, a year before Delano’s death and signed with the pseudonym of “Joaquín”, were published in the format of single panel gag cartoons in the English language weekly “The Island Times, from 1955 to 1963 in San Juan Puerto Rico. These were the years of the Cold War which made an impact in Puerto Rico but it was also, nevertheless a more gentle and innocent times. These gentle cartoon jewels, without being pretentious but rather done in a very genuine manner exposes the human condition that still resonates to this days sometimes with soft humor and sometimes with a wacky kind of humor.The style of these cartoons is reminiscent of the times in which they were published. A very simple and almost naïve style that with an economy of lines that delivers the intended message disguised as cartoon gag that remind us a bit of the New Yorker Magazine cartoons, James Thurber or even the animated cartoons of UPA Studios.
