Streeter 1551: "Includes a letter from John C. Calhoun, Secretary of State, to Texan envoys Van Zandt and Henderson, dated April 11, 1844, stating that the Secretary of the Navy has been instructed to order a strong naval force to concentrate in the Gulf of Mexico, 'to meet any emergency,' and similar orders have been issued by the Secretary of War to move disposable military forces to the Southwestern frontier, and that during the pending of the treaty the President would use all his constitutional powers to protect Texas form all foreign invasion."
