Philadelphia: M. Thomas, 1818. first American edition.. hardcover. Fair. Octavo, 271 pages. Leather spine over boards, much worn. Missing top and bottom inch of leather on spine, paper title label is not readable; cover corners worn. Pages are foxed. Gisborne (b. 1758) was an Anglican priest, as well as a poet and essayist. "He was one of a group of writers in the early nineteenth century known as scriptural geologists who criticized the trend of geology away from a basis in the Bible. " Wikipedia. But Gisborne is also notable for fighting for the abolition of the slave trade in England. The American edition was published in the same year as the British edition. This copy is Albion Bindley's copy (of the Bindley familiy of Pittsburgh) with his name in it in several places. CRBC or 020207A
