Cracking to hinges with exposed binding, Minor pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Binding is slightly shaky. Boards have moderate edge wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Soft crushing to spine ends. Mild sunning to spine and edges. Light marking and staining overall.

Thomas Hardy created in Tess not a standard Victorian heroine but a woman whose intense vitality shines against the bleak backdrop of a dying way of life.
