Plain endpapers and page edges. In good condition. Some darkening to cloth on spine and boards. Slightly bumped corners. Some darkening and mild foxing to endpapers, previous owners signature to front “Christina Cumming 1893.” Some minor tanning to inside pages, some minor foxing to last couple of pages. Else a good copy. 519 pp. Illustrated with a B&W frontis portrait of Thomas Hardy. This is the first one-volume ed. of "Tess", called the "Fifth Edition". Uniform with "A Group of Noble Dames". It was publ. in an edition of 5,000 copies in 1892. and incl. a Preface esp. written for this edition. There were 5 impressions in all totalling 17,000 copies.
