About This Item

Toronto/Montreal: McClelland and Stewart Limited, 1964. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Good. Frank Newfield (dust jacket). Large 8vo. Pp. [vi], 312. Black cloth, titles and decorations printed in gold on the spine, endpaper maps. Illustrated with two sections of black & white halftone photo reproductions. With bibliography and index. Corners lightly bumped, edges faintly foxed, gift inscription in ink on a blank preliminary. In the color photo illustrated dust jacket: spine ends and fore edges chipped, light soiling, colors remain vibrant. Holt (1922-2015) was a pioneering Jewish female journalist and lawmaker in British Colombia. This sensational volume was her first book, a controversial exposé on abuses of the Russian sect in Canada. Her text adequately conveys the terror instigated by the sect's elders; the photos hammer home the irrational horror. Dust jacket preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
