Newspaper was folded multiple times and has moderate toning, minor foxing and a closed tear that affects content of all pages and ranges from ¼" - 1" long. This issue is from 1843, the first year of the newspaper's publication. Editor Samuel C. Damon was a prominent early missionary to Hawaii, pastor of the Seamen's Bethel Church (where he served as Pastor for 42 years), and Seaman's Chaplain of the Honolulu American Seamen's Friend Society. This issue covers "Temperance in England", temperance for the lady, editorial correspondence, and news from the Sandwich Islands and Asia. Articles of note include "Massacres at Strong's Island" (now Kosrae in Micronesia), "A New Colony Annexed to the British Empire" referring to the colony of Hong Kong, and a law approved by Kauikeaouli or Kamehameha III regarding the carrying of weapons.
