About This Item
Cripple Creek, CO. Photograph. 13 1/3 x 9 inch letterpress halftone photograph of the Taylor & Brunton Mill, Cripple Creek, Colorado prominently featuring three railroad engines and crews from the Colorado Springs & Cripple Creek District Railroad. Photo is laid down on heavy black cardstock printed mount from the Bull Hill Mill, Cripple Creek District. On label in manuscript hand is "Jones Victor, Colo" and "The Taylor & Brunton Ore Sampler. This label possibly obscures the remaining printing on mount? Mount is unevenly cut on bottom edge plus shows chipping to edges. Photograph is lightly soiled but shows very good contrast. The firm of Taylor & Brunton had sampling mills throughout the west, using a new technique called 'mechanical time sampling'. Why or how a photo of the Taylor & Brunton Mill ended up on a Bull Hill Mill mount is unclear. The mills were close to each other and both were served by the CS & CCD Railroad, also known as the Short Line. Cripple Creek Colorado hosted the last large gold rush in Colorado beginning in 1890. We have been unable to trace the photographer or exactly date this reproduction. We beleive it to date from the early 20th century. Nonetheless, the photo presents some intrigue and is perfect for the historian of Cripple Creek, Colorado. From the Richard Ronzio collection. .
