Fine stated first edition (first printing, published September 1948), SIGNED by author Francis HenryTaylor. wjp was director of the Metropolitan Museum from 1940 to 1955. Clean beige cloth covered boards with brown, green and beige circular decoration on cover, brown title box with gold lettering, also brown lettering on spine. No bumping, fading or wear. Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound. Pages and edges are clean. Clean decorated endpapers. NO previous owner markings. Signed simply "Henry Francis Taylor" on blank flyleaf following half-title page. Full color and photogravure illustrations, most taken from the Print and Photographic Collections of te Metropolitan Museum of Art and the personal collection of the author. The color illustrations were made from objects in the possession of the Met Museum. 661 pages with index..
