Gogol wrote this historical romnce in the 1830s; itwas first published in America by Crowell in 1886; this is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing from three years later. Dark blue cloth binding with titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; frontis engraving of Gogol; ;xxv, 208 pages.Translation from the Russian and Preface by Jeremiah Curtin. Very light wear to the margins; the spine has darkened, but the gilt remains perfectly bright. Two family bookplates on the front paste-down, assumed to be Charles Wesley Rooks, a state senator in Tennessee. A solid copy that presents very well. In an archival plastic protector.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
