The second of her popular Grandmother series by this American folklorist, traveler and photographer, books which used the device of a grandmother as narrator to convey details of national culture as well as its folk legends. This book - containing "genuine" stories, translated from original Russian sources with the classic illustrations by Ivan Bilibin - including a full color frontispiece and seven internal color plates, eight black and white plates, and numerous black and white in-text illustrations, decorations and illuminated letters at the beginning of each story - was her breakthrough book. 292 pp.
