Issued by Studio/Viking in conjunction with New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, this lovely little book reproduces a story from 9th-10th-century Japan about a tiny girl, no more than 3 inches tall, who is courted by suitors from far & wide, including the emperor. A combination fairy tale-myth, breathtakingly illustrated with exquisite watercolor/gilt/silver/ink paintings reproduced from an 18th-century illustrated edition on "Taketori" ("The Bamboo Cutter") in the museum's collection. The FIRST EDITION, First Printing from 1980, this slim hardcover has burgundy cloth-covered boards with gilt design to front & lettering to spine. Kept from perfection by an old gift inscription on ffep. Otherwise, looks, feels, & smells just a tad less crisp than Brand New! Completely clean, binding strong & straight, pages white & unmarked, colors vivid. Unclipped DJ is also Near Fine, with very minor, shallow scratches/wrinkles to both ends of spine & corners.
