The art of successful chess playing consists of the ability to combine the strategic principles of chess with the combinational and tactical methods of combat. Strategy comprises the general plan of the game: determining the main thrust, arranging the pieces through development, establishing the pawn configuration, making decisions concerning transpositions to the end game and so on All of these are governed by general positional theory and the judgment of specific positions.
