About This Item

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1893. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Quarto. xxv, 96 plates, 97-102pp. Bound in contemporary green three-quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering and ruling on spine. With description and explanation of every colorant and cotton printing sample. Based on the work by Gustav Schultz and Paul Julius published in 1888, "Tabellarische Übersicht der künstlichen organischen Farbstoffe."

In his preface Adolf Lehne points to the fact that the application of colorants and their nuances, as they are presented and described in brief texts only by Schultz and Julius, cannot be identified perfectly without samples. For that reason Lehne compiled a collection of colors of the common colorants with extensive notes on their utilization, authenticity and proof on the fiber itself. Lehne's selection of colorants is based on the second edition, published by Schultz only, containing 392 colorants, while excluding almost all of the colorants not readily available in the trade.

Schultz and his publisher gave permission to Lehne to use the trade descriptions of colorants including the abbreviations for the various paint manufacturers as used in their second edition, this way expressing the close connection between the two publications.

All colors for this edition by Lehne were produced in his color laboratory with uniform trade products and applied to the textile. In some cases, particularly with bating products, several colorants were produced, to illustrate the effect of different mordant. The work contains chapters on the examination of the colorants to verify authenticity, proof of the colorant on the fiber, dyeing and print provisions.

The ninety-six plates with 324 descriptions and samples reference the number used in the Schultz publication include text regarding application, dispensation, authenticity and verification. The colored samples itself (each one by two inches) are glued into the column at the right of each plate. They are velvet and paper tabs, regular and textured cotton tabs and presented as plain and squares with printed patterns, some of them bow ties. Each of the tabs indicates the percentage of colorant applied. The part presenting the samples contains up to seven blank half pages bound in to offset the heightened samples in order to stabilize the publication. Contains register at rear.

Text in German. Some light wear along edges, very light scuffing of boards. Lightly starting at inside back cover. Some light offsetting of colored samples to opposing pages. Ex Libris on inside front cover.
