About This Item

London: Parker, Son, And Bourn, 1862. Hardcover. Good. Fifth Edition of Mill's first major work, bound in full leather especially for King's College of London. Parker, Son, And Bourn, 1862; no later printings indicated; xvi, 536pp. / xii, 550pp. Full brown pebbled leather binding, with King's College crest in gilt on front board, presentation plate on Vol. 1 front paste-down states "Presented by the Council of King's College, London to Henry Law Kempthorne as a prize for Clinical Medicine 'Todd Memorial Prize' Medical Department, Winter Session 1862-3". Both volumes in Good/Good- condition. Bindings are tight, sturdy, and fully intact; leather worn at edges of boards, split over most corners; moderate amount of rubbing to boards as well; gilt on spine and front remains bright and bold; text very good throughout both volumes; another previous owner's book plate on rear paste-downs, name at top edge of title pages. A unique copy of this classic work. A note in the July 1870 issue of the Journal of Mental Science states about the recipient of this set: "t is with great regret that we record the premature death of Dr. Henry Law Kempthorne, who though only twenty-nine years of age, had already given evidence of great attainments in that branch of the profession to which he was devoted". Due to the size/weight of this set extra charges may apply for international shipping. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
