About This Item

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1881. First Edition (NAP) . Hardcover. Very Good-. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Author Portrait. Bound in tan cloth with titles and decorations stamped in gilt and black. Author's edition (stated) with corresponding 1881 dates to the title and copyright pages; no additional printings. Precedes the trade edition in green cloth. Aubertine Woodward (Auber Forestier) lived with translator Rasmus B. Anderson and worked, uncredited except for a mention in Anderson's biographical sketch of Bjornson, in Madison, Wisconsin. She would later write two works on music, plus her translation work on Norwegian and other songs and tales. Two old news clippings are laid in. This copy shows moderate edgewear and soil, with slight shelf slant. No splits or frays. The hinges are solid. The spine is a bit faded. Excepting the bookplate of Norwegian-American collector Herman Gimmestad on the front pastedown, the volume is unmarked. All contents clean and tight. An early printing of the first American edition.
