About This Item
Pankurst, E. Sylvia. "The Suffragette. The History of the Women's Militant Suffrage Movement 1905-1910." New York: Sturgis & Walton, 1911. First American edition. (First UK edition was published the same year.) 32 photo-illustrated portraits and images of important events related to women's suffrage. Octavo. Original green cloth boards. No dust jacket. Sylvia Pankhurst was the daughter of Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) founder Emmeline Pankhurst. Like her mother, Sylvia fought with conviction for working class women and children (particularly those living in the East End) and was devoted to finding welfare support for these vulnerable populations. This work was published in 1911--early in the militant suffrage movement--and details the trials and inhumane treatment that suffrage activists faced, including arrests, trials, and the tortuous ordeal of force-feeding, which she accompanies with a half-tone and medical evidence of the dangers it presents. Half-tone images throughout book depict important people and events related to the cause including the first women's suffrage demonstration held in Trafalgar Square, scenes from the prisons, and force-feeding. Small dampstain on inner top edge of first 300 pages. Very small closed tear to lower outside edge of pages 440 to end of book. Some light wear to spine. In good to very good condition.
