About This Item

Philadelphia: Printed by Lydia R. Bailey, 1840., 1840. Later edition; the first printing was in 1836. 8vo. [1] page Preface, 69 pp. + approx. 100 faintly lined blank leaves + [4] pp. Ads. Original full calf binding with spinal label. Intended to be used in conjunction with (and after) Wood's well-known course at the University of Pennsylvania medical school. Wood was a physician, teacher and author: in addition to his Treatise on Practice (published in 1847) he is most well known for coauthoring the Dispensatory of the United States, which first appeared in 1833. This book came from the library of T. C. Hopkins whose small ink name stamp is on the front pastedown and on the bottom of the title page. Presumably this book was actively used by Hopkins as 28 of the blank pages have extensive ink notes about material medica and pharmacological formulas, treatments as well as a number of articles/formulas are tipped in (and several laid in) from various contemporary publications and newspapers. The covers show overall aging and use, the spinal label is completely effaced, there is a small chip in the leather at the bottom of the rear hinge; binding internally quite tight. The text has light foxing (mainly on the title page), there is an approx. 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" light triangular-shaped stain extending down from the top center bound signatures tapering down to 1/2" by the end of the printed text; the blank (and filled) pages are quite bright. Overall a good book. Scarce: OCLC lists 13 libraries worldwide which own this book.. Hardcover. Good.
