(Subject: Colonial & Other Wars ) The Regiment Meuron was raised in 1781 consisting of 1300 mainly Swiss Officers and men. After serving at the Cape of Good Hope and in Ceylon(now Sri Lanka) until 1795 they were then transferred into British service in India. The English East India Company initially used the regiment as an auxiliary force but in 1798 the British Government negotiated a revised contract whereby it became a regiment of the British Army. As such it saw service in India,the Mediterranean and Canada where it was disbanded in 1816.
