Michael Joseph, London, 1949. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Good. 268 pages. Blue coloured boards with silver illustration, of a young man lying on his back playing a violin, to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel. Silver writing on the spine. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing a young man lying on his back playing the violin, with a bird on his knee and in the tree to his right there are 4 people, with pink background. Black writing on the front panel and spine. Autobiography of the author growing up as a young man in the first Republic of Czechoslovakiain the early 20th century. Minor bumping to the head and to the heel of the spine and the spine is cocked. There is a patch to the top spine edge which is faded, commensurate with loss of dustwrapper. Browning and light foxing to the endpapers. Browning and offset tanning to the endpapers. Internal pages quite are age toned. Previous owners stamp to the free front endpaper and original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel. Rubbing and slight chipping to the dustwrapper corners. The top spine edge has the first 1 " missing. There are 2 small pinch marks removed from the lower spine edge and the spine itself is quite sun darkened. The dustwrapper itself is rubbed and faded and the back panel is quite yellow. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. This is the first UK edition.
