About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1949 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Blue cloth with royal lion stamped in silver on front board, map on endpapers, xxiii, 8 ff plates, 271 pp, bibliography. Head & tail of spine bumped & worn, corners and bottom edge of boards lightly worn, shaken hinges repaired with acid-free PVA, owner's name and date on front paste-down. DJ rubbed and soiled, with closed tears up to 1 cm, some repaired with tape by previous owner, a few other tape marks, all corners clipped; in new Brodart archival cover. Printing not indicated, which in Harcourt Brace publications sometimes indicates a first edition; whether a first or not, the impression is very crisp. Strode travelled to Sweden in March 1939, returning in the fall after the war had started. He returned in 1946 to see how Sweden had fared during the war. The book is something between a travel narrative and a study of mid-century Swedish society. Contents: places, provinces, and phases of daily life; history: from the beginning to Gustav V; cooperatives for better living; for the general welfare; Swedish character and temperament; south Sweden; last week-end. Shipping weight 3 lbs.. . VG/G+. 23½ X 16 cm.
