About This Item

Mystic, CT: Mystic Seaport Museum, Incorporated, 1988. Fourth Edition [stated]. Trade paperback. Good. viii, 232 pages. Author index. Cover has some wear and soiling and is creased at back. Initials of H. D. Langley on half-title! Harold David Langley (15 February 1925 - 29 July 2020) was an American diplomatic and naval historian who served as associate curator of naval history at the Smithsonian Institution from 1969 to 1996. As a naval historian, he was a pioneer in exploring American naval social and medical history. Langley began his professional career at the Library of Congress, Manuscripts Division, in Washington, D.C., where he served as a manuscripts assistant in 1951-52, while a graduate student. Moving to the University of Pennsylvania Libraries in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was a graduate student, he served as a manuscripts specialist, rare book collection, 1952-54. Returning to the Library of Congress, he was a manuscripts specialist, there in 1954-55. In 1955, Marywood College in Scranton, appointed him assistant professor of history. He remained there until 1957, when he received an appointment as a diplomatic historian in the U.S. Department of State. In 1964, Catholic University of America appointed him associate professor, and in 1968 promoted him to full professor in 1968. In 1969, the Smithsonian Institution, appointed him associate curator of naval history. While holding that position, he was an adjunct professor of American history at the Catholic University of America from 1971 to 2001. "NAVAL & MARITIME HISTORY: A BIBLIOGRAPHY made its first appearance in 1951 as a mimeographed supplement to Professor Robert G. Albion's courses at Harvard University. Thereafter it was his practice over the years to bring out supplements or to compile completely new editions at regular intervals. Upon the publication of the fourth edition in 1972 by the Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport Museum, Professor Albion turned to new projects until his energies gradually waned with advancing age. After Albion's death in 1983 the present compiler determined to put together a new supplement. Although other duties have brought delays, the project is now finished. This supplement adds some 2,000 works published since mid-1971 to the more than 5,000 titles that comprise the fourth edition. Like its predecessor, the present volume includes only books and dissertations in English, arranged in the topical groups set up by Albion years ago." Benjamin Woods Labaree (born July 21, 1927) is a leading historian of American colonial history and American maritime history. He earned his bachelor's degree at Yale University in 1950, after having served in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1945-46. After graduation from Yale, he went on to Harvard University, where he earned his master's degree in history in 1953 and his Ph.D. in history in 1957. 1958, he received an appointment at Harvard University, rising from instructor to assistant professor of history and Allston Burr Senior Tutor. While serving in these appointments, he was also managing editor of the Essex Institute Historical Collections at the Essex Institute, Salem, Massachusetts, in 1956-60. In 1963, he was appointed dean of Williams College, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, serving in that role until 1967. Concurrently, he served as an associate professor, then professor of history, 1963-77 and later Ephraim Williams Professor of American History, 1972-77. Between 1977-1989, he was director of the Williams College-Mystic Seaport Program (commonly called Williams-Mystic) at Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, Connecticut, 1977-89; director, Center for Environmental Studies at Williams College, 1989-92; and professor of history and environmental studies, 1989-92. He retired from Williams College in 1992 as professor emeritus. Closely associated with Professor Robert G. Albion of Harvard University, Labaree succeeded him as Director of the Frank C. Munson Institute of American Maritime History in 1974. His directorship of the Munson Institute culminated with being co-director of the National Endowment of the Humanities Summer Institute for college and university teachers on America and the Sea in 1996. Labaree has been honored with the Citation of Honor by the Society of Colonial Wars in 1978, The Wilbur Cross Award by the Connecticut Humanities Council in 1990, the Samuel Eliot Morison Award of the USS Constitution Museum in 1993, and a co-recipient of the John Lyman Book Award by the North American Society for Oceanic History in 1999.
