About This Item
Copenhagen: Rosenkilde and Bagger, 1959. Paperback. Edited by Stefan Einarsson and Norman E. Eliason. Small 4to. Stiff beige printed wrappers, dust jacket. (11pp), 297pp. Errata slip tipped in; uncut. Near fine/near fine. Quite handsome and tight first edition of this 70th birthday festschrift, various essays by the influential American medievalist, etymologist and Chaucer scholar who long taught at Johns Hopkins University (1889-1971). The many-pages of "Tabula Gratulatoria" (list of congratulations) includes Malone's younger brother, famed historian Dumas Malone (1892-1986) -- THE authority on Thomas Jefferson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning six-volume "Jefferson and His Time" (1948-81) and editor of the mammoth "Dictionary of American Biography." Best of all, tipped to an inner flyleaf is a heavy stock 6" X 9" leaf signed large and bold by Dumas Malone in black fineline. An unusual copy of an uncommon title.
