About This Item

Leiden: E. J. Brill. Good with no dust jacket. 1968. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Viii, 353 pp. Index, sources. 15 tables, some folding. Large octavo. Grey-blue cloth with blind ruling, title in gilt on front cover and spine. Spine sunned and title is barely legible. Interior has library stamp on title page but no other library impedimenta, occasional light pencil marginalia, otherwise clean and sturdy. An examination of the "genealogising" in Greek literature from Homer on. "Homer "knows that Agamemnon's father was Atreus; Hedios asserts that he wa Pleisthenes; the commentators add that Pleisthenes was Atreus's son and predeceased his father, so that Agamemnon was known as son to Atreus. Here plainly there is no question of "ignorance": there was some reason which compelled Hesiod to change the accepted genealogy and change it in a certain way." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 353 pages .
