London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1862. First Authorised Edition, illustrated and bound in fancy embossed cloth. A selection of natural history articles originally published in Cornhill Magazine titled. Omnipresence of Life; Ponds and Rock-Pools; A Garden Wall and its Traces of Past Life; An extinct Animal recognized by its Tooth.; Talking in Beetles; Every Organism a Colony. George Lewes is known for living with novelist George Eliot psued. A newspaper article is laid in mentioning this. CONDITION Blue blind embossed cloth with bright Gilt title and spine decoration, Gilt engraving of Crab to front, hand coloured frontis illus, pp viii 196 with 17 nice engraved figural illus. Pages are rough cut print on the best quality rag paper stock. Some wear to edges and a bit shaken, first end pages has been pasted to front pastedown to eliminate previous owners details I assume, name to reverse of this, tidy cut away top first page, and tidy address top of following pages. Mostly very bright and clean with odd folded top cnr, 16 page publishers cat to rear also dated 1862. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
