Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810 ¿ 1891), born in Bethel, Connecticut, was an American showman and businessman remembered for his American Museum, where he promoted celebrated hoaxes and curiosities, and for the Barnum & Bailey Circus. But he was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for some time a politician. In 1850 he promoted the American tour of singer Jenny Lind, paying her an unprecedented $1,000 a night for 150 nights. B.
