About This Item

The Bookplate Society, [London], first edition, 2016. Laminated illustrated wrappers, large 8vo, 28 cm,. 199 pp, ills, coats of arms. From the introduction: - A duke's coronet of rank consists of a gold circlet of eight strawberry leaves .. hence the main title of this book Not all dukedoms are included in detail, only some of those which were extant at the beginning of the eighteenth century and remained so throughout the whole or part of the next two hundred years or were created during that period. The reason for this timescale is that bookplates did not exist, in England, in any great quantity prior to 1700 but there was a sudden outburst in the reign of Queen Anne 1701-14 and their usage continued to expand throughout the next two centuries. Furthermore not all the dukedoms in this period are included -only some of those where bookplates were used by one or more holders of the title and, to a lesser extent, by their near relations. Dukedoms held by Princes of the Royal Blood, such as York, Gloucester or Cambridge, are excluded but ducal titles held by illegitimate offspring of the Sovereign are included. Near Fine.
