About This Item

Epworth Press, 1965 VG/GOOD+ . DJ is rubbed to most edges , notably to upper edge and over spine. some creases to edges, and the rear cream panel is a tad grubby. Firm binding. some faint foxing to edges of textblock - but not in text itself. spine dj is sunned. price-clipped. internally, a good clean copy, without inscriptions or marginalia. 1st. The life-story of the inimitable Maurice is a vivid and colourful account of the gay trouper who sang his way into the hearts of millions of people the world over. It is a stirring autobiography of an outwardly gay and glamorous life shown against the background of two World Wars, each of which brought its threat to his life-and career. Here is a real-life drama , with Maurice cast in many roles-the penniless boy, the acrobat and clown, the night-club singer, the star of the Folies Bergere, the soldier, the boxer, the film star. Interwoven with this human story is a sparkling array of famous personalities. The sensational Mistinguett, Elsie Janis, Nita Raya, Yvonne Vallee, Charles Boyer, Jeanette MacDonald, Claudette Colbert, Douglas Fairbanks, Marlene Dietrich, have all played an important part in the life of the man who made a straw hat, a cane and a gay smile internationally famous. Born of humble parents, Chevalier, in his fight for fame, has known hardship, frustration and disappointment.
