This interesting work was written by Prussian-American jurist, author and philosopher, Francis Lieber. He was best known for the Lieber Code, the first codification of the laws of war, which was then used as a foundation for future Hague and Geneva conventions. Born in Germany, Lieber moved to Boston in 1827, becoming a professor at Columbia University in his later years. 'The Stranger in America' is comprised of letters documenting travels and experiences of the United States. The author presents the manners, customs and National peculiarities of the country, from his perspective as a stranger, coming from Berlin. Illustrated with a frontispiece by Robert Cruikshank.
