About This Item
London: Richard Bentley, 1835 . First edition. Leather. Near Fine. 8" by 5". Robert Cruikshank . A beautifully bound, first UK edition of this very scarce collection of sketches surrounding the "peculiarities" of the United States, written by American-German author, Francis Lieber. This interesting work was written by Prussian-American jurist, author and philosopher, Francis Lieber. Born in Germany, Lieber moved to Boston in 1827, becoming a professor at Columbia University in his later years. 'The Stranger in America' is comprised of letters documenting travels and experiences of the United States. The author presents the manners, customs and National peculiarities of the country, from his perspective as a stranger, coming from Berlin. Illustrated with a frontispiece by Robert Cruikshank. Collated, complete. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Endpapers have been renewed. Bound without the front and rear blanks. Externally, lovely, with a little fading to the spine.
