About This Item
New York: Olympia Press, 1967. Paperback. Light shelfwear. Very good. A paperback reprint of a first novel by a young California writer, as originally released by the Olympia Press in Paris a few years ago. It is not without interest to not that Grove Press has recently published a slightly modified version of James Sherwood's novel, in hard covers. (Would this suggest that our copyright laws are still imperfect?)
Stradella herself has the flavor of the authentic: whoever she is, it is possible to identify her with one of those super-glossy dieties, a Brooklyn Eve gone Hollywood, another one of those sex-symbols-for-the-millions. And out of those multitudes Stradella singles out the most inhibited of her admirers, Archie Flum the diffident nincompoop. We see him being turned overnight into the greatest lover of all times, by the merest brush of her magic wand; we see him breathe at last, and discover love, life, and adulthood. Alas! Poor Archie discovers in fact too many things too quickly, and great is his fall when Stradella's caprice turns him from lover elect to houseboy. TC201.
