This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition (stated "Fiftieth Thousand"), which was sold by subscription only, "on the exclusive territory plan." This copy in a better binding than usually seen. Red cloth with maroon leather tips and spine; titling in gilt on the spine and front cover; marbled page ends. Introduction by Dr. J.L.M. Curry. "The original autobiography brought up-to-date with over half a hundred full page photo and halftone engravings and drawings by Frank Beard."Clean text; 455 pages. Indexed. Laid-in is a magazine cutting showing Tuskegee Institute and a contemporary business card with some notes. There are three small chips, to one corner and to both spine ends. Cloth has spots of fade that give it a mottled look. Despite these flaws, a solid and attractive copy of this famous work.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Frank Beard. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
