Early American Edition, First Or Second Printing By Altemus, No Copyright Date As Book Was Never Copyrighted In The Us, Issued By Altemus From 1918 On In Various Formats [See Barton, Pictus Orbis Sambo, Pp 198-199 And 300-301, But This Source Is Without Detail Except That Red Color On Spine Is The First Altemus Edition And Orange Appears To Be The Second, Also See The Henry Altemus Website For Bibliographic Details]. Original Bright Orange Cloth Spine Lettered In Blue, Boards With Blue Paper Covers Titled And Decorated In Orange And With Color Paste-On Illustration Of Sambo In His New Clothes, Red Jacket And Red Soles Of Shoes, Reproducing An Interior Illustration. Series Title Is "Altemus' Wee Books For Wee Folks", The Series Originally Being For "Wee Books For Wee Folk", But This Title First Printed By Altemus In 1918 With "Folks" Title. All Colors On Dj, And Some Colors On Some Interior Illustrations, Are Printed Off-Register, Particularly The Dj Cover. Scarce. Covers And Cloth Near Fine, Almost No Trace Of Wear, Just Two Literally Pinpoiint Frays At Each Of Two Front Tips, No Other Fraying To Cloth Or Ppaer, Colors Bright, Illustration On Cover Without Any Surface Scratching Or Abrasion. All Other Pages Present Including Initial And Final Blanks. Pencil Inscription "From Danny Xmas 1918" On Recto Of Frontispiece, And Decorative Small Child's Bookplate And Boookseller's Label Of Chas E Lauriat, Boston, On Front Pastedown [The Date Is Entirely Credible As This Book From The Family Of The Recipient, This Has Remained In One Family For 100 Years]. Pages Are Bright, Immaculate Except For Matching Sets Of Light Foxing Centered At Center Spine Edge Of 9 Sets Of Pages In The First Half Of The Book. Hinges Tight, Original Binding Staples Present But Rusted, And 8 Sets Of Facing Pages Have Small Clear Tape Reinforcement To Top And/Or Bottom Spine Edges. Dj With Design Reproducing The Design Of The Book But On White Paper, With All Design And Lettering In Blue Like On Book, And With Same Inset Color Illustration On Front Cover, Flaps Blank, Rear Cover With Ads For 8 "Wee Books For Wee Folks" Titles, This Book Being Fifth In List. Dj With Wear At Edges, 1/2" X 3/16" Deep Chip At Bottom Of Front Panel With 2" Closed Tear Above It, A Few Short Closed Tears And Tiny Chips At Edges, Internal Clear Tape Repairs To Spine And To Flap Edges. Dj Just Slightly Shorter Than The Book Itself But Edges Do Not Appear Trimmed And Are Quite Even.
